Man United legend Alex Ferguson: Insult to say I left David Moyes a past-it, second-rate squad
The Red Devils have struggled since Fergie's departure, but the Old Trafford legend denies his successor inherited a group of players in decline
Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed it is an “insult” to suggest he left Manchester United in bad shape when he retired.
Ferguson, talking at a live event in London to promote the new paperback version of his book My Autobiography, is annoyed at accusations he left behind a poor, ageing squad for successor David Moyes in summer 2013.
Ferguson said: “That’s an insult. We’d just won title by 11 points.
"We’d left young players there - Jones, Smalling, Welbeck. There were other players there - Van Persie, Vidic, Carrick and so on. Good players.
“[Chelsea striker Didier] Drogba is 36 and he scored at Old Trafford today. Van Persie is 32. My best signing was Carrington. The facilities there are first class.”
The 72-year-old insisted Louis Van Gaal is the right man for the job but claimed the current injuries mean the squad is taking “one step forward and two steps back.”
Alex Ferguson's career in trophies:
“You can’t get consistency or results until you get a regular back four,“ he said. “Shaw and Rojo are young, Rafael is the only player with experience.
“Absolutely [Van Gaal is the right man]. No doubt in my mind he’s the right man for the job.”
Actor and United fan James Nesbitt posed the questions but failed to ask about ex-Reds captain Roy Keane after his recent blasts at Ferguson.
But Ferguson did give one gem about United legend, Gary Neville.
”Gary Neville woke up in the morning with a grudge. He’d get up at 6 in the morning to see what the press were saying,” said Ferguson.
