Why exactly led to the killing of Muammar Gaddafi?

Col. Gaddafi has been killed in Libya according the the National Transitional Council.
After several weeks of searching, Col. Gaddafi was captured in his birthplace, Sirte. Sirte is about 360 km (220 miles) east of Tripoli.  The colonel was captured wounded with severe injuries in both legs. Unfortunate, the Col. could not make it and is pronounced dead today in Libya.
Col. Muammar Gaddafi made a narrow escape in August this year and
refused to lay down arms or hand over president after ruling the Libya for 42 years. He is a wanted man being sought after by the International Criminal Court.
Abdel Majid, an official of the National Transitional Council (NTC) told Reuter’s news agency that Col. Gaddafi was captured with  severe wounds on both legs and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. A soldier who says he captured Muammar Gaddafi told the BBC that the colonel had shouted: “Don’t shoot!”
“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed.”
Currently there are no Gaddafi forces anymore in Libya. His fighters are now being chased and they have taken to their heels.
An NTC commander in Sirte says the city has been liberated.  Most fighters in Sirte are now chanting “Allah Akbar”, which literally means “God is great” in jubilation.
The NTC has also suffered many casualties in Bani Walid, south east of Tripoli in recent weeks.
Many people have waited for Col. Gaddafi to be captured. It’s a pity Col Gaddafi was captured wounded. Sad, he is now dead. Why was Muammar Gaddafi killed? According to Pentagon spokeperson, they went in there for the regime and not for his assassination. So why did the UN NATO not stop his assassination? There are also conflicting reports that after being short in the leg, the Col. was short in the head. So who killed Col. Muammar Gaddafi?
