Breakfast smells
and tension filled the air of an eatery in Logan Square Thursday morning
as a few dozen die hards gathered to listen to the last installment of
“Serial,” the viral podcast that gave millions a window into the
mysterious 1999 murder and court case of a Baltimore teenager.
One woman closed her eyes and
rested her head on folded arms next to a half-eaten breakfast burrito.
Others cradled their chins and looked concerned as the voice of Sarah
Koenig, the former Baltimore Sun reporter who created and narrates the
podcast, came over the loud speaker of Lula Cafe.
The story revolves around
Hae-Min Lee and her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, who was charged with
strangling Lee and is currently in a Maryland prison. The masterful
story telling and Koenig’s dogged re-examination of evidence creates an
addictive “Who Done It?” narrative in 12 podcast chapters. The podcast
popularized the term “binge listen.”
